Traditional vs. Stereotypical vs. Modern Yogi

As a yoga teacher, I constantly encounter stereotypes about what it means to practise yoga. People often ask, "Shouldn't you be vegan?" or "You don’t look like a yogi." Some assume I should always be decked out in Lululemon, standing on my head, or fitting into a size 6. These assumptions are not only frustrating but disheartening.
Through my training, I learned about the rich history and true essence of yoga. For me, yoga is about acceptance. It's an inclusive practice—truly for everyone. Saying, "I can't do yoga" is like saying, "I can't take a bath, I’m too dirty." It simply doesn’t make sense.
Now, I’m not claiming that modern yogis are the same as traditional ones. We admire and respect the origins of yoga—the wisdom and teachings passed down from those who brought this beautiful practice into our lives. But like anything, yoga has evolved over time. While its outward expression may have changed, its core principles remain intact, and this is what I strive to honour in my practice and my classes.
Traditional yoga teaches us to nurture our bodies while refraining from self-judgement when we struggle. The Eight Limbs of Yoga lay out a path to elevate our practice and guide us towards samadhi (bliss). But within those teachings, we are also reminded to be kind to ourselves, to embrace our individuality, and to understand that yoga is a lifelong journey.
I’m not the kind of yoga teacher who never drinks alcohol or skips the occasional Friday night Chinese takeaway. But I try—every day—to take care of myself, to speak kindly to myself, and to live with balance. I work out when it feels right, and I know when it’s time to reset with a little self-care. This is my journey. It’s about taking care of my body and mind in a way that works for me.
I encourage you to throw away the yoga stereotypes. Yoga is not a "one-size-fits-all" practice. Yoga teachers—and practitioners—come in all shapes, sizes, and mindsets. And that’s a beautiful thing. We’re all united by the same goal: to spread this positive, transformative practice throughout the world, each in our own way.
